"Awakening from the 20th Century: Projects Engaged with Environmental Issues from 1970 and 2017"

Abstract: To introduce his new video work Miami Beach Elegy, 2017, Lord will present projects from his 50 year career that engage with environmentalism and the changing climate across the mediums of sculpture, performance, and video. Chip Lord trained as an architect, and was a founding partner of Ant Farm in 1968. With the Ant Farm group he produced the video art classics Media Burn and The Eternal Frame as well as the public sculpture, Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo Texas. His research-based practice blends documentary and experimental traditions and moves between video, photography, and installation. Lord’s work has been exhibited and published widely and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Tate Modern, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the FRAC Centre, the Pompidou Centre, and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. He began teaching in the Visual Art Department at UC San Diego in 1982 and joined the UCSC faculty in 1988. Currently he is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Film & Digital Media, and lives in San Francisco.
